I started collecting DVD's
in maybe January of '99, and I have to admit - it's a startling format.
The picture is wonderful, and even with my dodgy hearing, I can tell the
difference in the sound.
I get most of our discs
from America, though recently I've discovered the
joys of shopping in both Canada and Australia. They're cheap, and (touch wood) so far
nothing's been stopped by Customs. It's only the hardware that's cost a
f**king fortune!
I have to say that anyone interested in film must get
DVD. I know that everybody else seems to be saying this too, but it's
true. I never converted to laser disc because of the fact that you can't
get the film on one side, and the price was ridiculous. DVD solves both
these problems - although you have to be careful with the side issue -
other people in the UK who bought Armageddon when it first came out will
know what I'm on about.
The one thing to make sure of if you upgrade to DVD
is - REGION-FREE. Don't get caught out and find you can only play discs
from the area of the world you bought the player. In this day in age we
should expect and must demand choice - I am not going to buy a disc from
the UK, where the film has been censored and there are no extras, when I
can buy the same disc from elsewhere in the world and get the uncut film
with deleted scenes, mini-documentaries and bios for half the price.

I have recently made the jump into HD. Unfortunately
I chose the wrong side and started buying HD-DVDs. I have now made
myself a (not so) mini-PC with a blu-ray/HD combo drive so with a little
luck, the future should be (region-free I hope!) blu. |
